Abstract

The SUNY Micro‐Credentialing Task Force Report and Recommendations provides a comprehensive review of the current literature and growing national dialogue on micro‐credentials. It provides a 101 on micro-credentials, including evidence‐based best practices and ongoing efforts across many colleges and state systems to define and translate micro‐credentials. The work profiled the practical application of micro-credentials across SUNY’s 64 campuses to develop and/or implement micro‐credentials with the many benefits for students and programs. This report also provides IET developers with practical ways to fund their development, and support faculty and staff implementation buy-in, including strategies to translate the micro-credentials into college credit reflecting demonstrated skills and learning competencies.

Benefits and Uses

One of the key benefits of the report is the inclusion of practical ways colleges can design and implement micro-credentials, including evidence‐based best practices. This resource is helpful for administrators and program directors when designing IETs, especially for NRS levels 1-3, as a way to reward learning and skill development in bite-size pieces and to incentivize retention. This report also provides IET developers with practical ways to fund their development, and support faculty and staff implementation buy-in, including strategies to translate the micro-credentials into college credit reflecting demonstrated skills and learning competencies.
